Short takes: Sindhu one step away, Sen too in final
Two-time Olympics medallist PV Sindhu stayed on course for an elusive CWG gold while Lakshya Sen regained his rhythm just in time to enter his maiden CWG final today. Sindhu rode on her superior technical skills to outwit Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min 21-19 21-17 in a 49-minute contest to reach her second successive final. World No. 10 Sen lost his way after a dominating start against 87th-ranked Jia Heng Teh of Singapore in the men’s singles semifinals. However, the Indian recovered to complete a 21-10 18-21 21-16 win. It could have been an all-Indian men’s final but an error-prone Kidambi Srikanth squandered a first game advantage to lose to the lower-ranked Tze Yong Ng of Malaysia 21-13 19-21 10-21. The world No. 42 Tze had shocked reigning world champion Yew Kean Loh of Singapore in the quarterfinals. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty ensured that India would fight for a third gold on Monday when they beat Malaysia’s Chen Peng Soon and Tian Kian Men 21-6, 21-15 to reach the men’s doubles final.
Sharath-Sathiyan settle for silver
Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan were outsmarted by familiar foes Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford of England in the men’s doubles final. The Indian duo had to settle for silver for the second successive edition after losing 11-8 8-11 3-11 11-7 4-11 to the defending champions. Meanwhile, Sreeja Akula went down to Australia’s Yangzi Liu in the women’s singles bronze medal playoff. Sreeja lost 11-3 6-11 2-11 11-7 13-15 11-9 7-11.
Squash: Pallikal-Ghosal bag bronze
The Indian mixed doubles pair of Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal won the bronze medal in the squash event. In a repeat of the last edition’s final, Ghosal and Pallikal hardly broke a sweat as they prevailed 11-8 11-4 over the Australian combine of Donna Lobban and Cameron Pilley in the bronze medal playoff. The Indian duo had gone down to Joelle King and Paul Coll in the semifinals. Agencies
