Shohei Ohtani has already mastered brand new pitch Yankee closer shocked him with
Shohei Ohtani is using the end of this season to workshop another new pitch, just terrifying news for the rest of the MLB.
Shohei Ohtani’s willingness to play as a designated hitter almost serves as a research opportunity for the 5th-best pitcher in the American League in terms of ERA. When he sees something at the plate that other pitchers do that catches him off guard, he can start thinking about how to integrate that into his own game.
Just days ago, Ohtani was caught off guard by a 100 MPH sinker from Yankees closer Clay Holmes which forced him to check the speed in real-time on the scoreboard.
Ohtani, who previously didn’t have a sinker in his repertoire, had been working on that pitch this season, and he unveiled it just before he faced Holmes. But the 100 MPH pitch might have motivated him even further, because he’s already reached that same speed.
Shohei Ohtani hits 100 MPH with brand new sinker
Ohtani didn’t have a sinker not too long ago.
Now? He’s hitting 100 MPH with it. Oh, and this was in just the next game after he saw Holmes hit 100 at the plate with a sinker.
Forget the remarkable nature of Ohtani’s game and the fact that he plays both sides of the ball. His sheer willingness to learn and add more stuff to his game in the middle of a season at the highest level possible is downright absurd and a joy to watch. There may not be another player who loves the game more and wants to win at all costs.
It’s a shame he’s stuck on the Angels, who can’t seem to build a proper team even with skilled players like Ohtani and Mike Trout gracing their foundation.
You have to love this guy.
