Major League Soccer star Alan Pulido saw red during a Leagues Cup game for headbutting his rival.

The Sporting Kansas City striker was shown a straight red in the 30th minute of the clash against FC Cincinnati after losing his cool.

Pulido became tangled with Yerson Mosquera, who is on loan from Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers, as they tussled for the ball.

Mosquera, frustrated after being brought down by Pulido’s challenge, pushed his opponent on the back.

But Pulido bizarrely reacted in an overly aggressive fashion, headbutting Mosquera  in the face.

Mosquera’s teammate Alvas Powell came running over along with Cincinnati captain Luciano Acosta, who shouted at Pulido in defense of his player.

The incident took place right in front of referee Daniel Quintero Huitron who rushed over and swiftly brandished  the red card.

The dismissal left Kansas City with ten men for the remaining 60 minutes of the game and it instantly proved costly as they conceded just moments later through goalkeeper John Pulskamp’s own goal.

Brandon Vazquez scored in the 56th minute for Cincinnati, assisted by Acosta, to make it 2-2.

Gadi Kinda put Kansas City up again, only for Acosta’s stoppage-time equalizer from the spot tying the game 3-3 at the end of the second half and forcing penalty kicks.

Cincinnati went on to win the penalty shootout 4-2 and gain an extra point in their Leagues Cup group.

Sporting Kansas City faces Guadalajara next but Pulido will be ineligible to face his former side.
