Sherpas: G20: Kerala mundu, chai for sherpas – Times of India

KUMARAKOM: When G20 sherpas first met in Udaipur last December, they sported Rajasthani ‘safas’ or turbans. As they assemble in Kumarakom for the second of their four rounds of discussions in the run up to the leaders’ summit in September, Kerala ‘mundus’ or dhotis and thortus or angavastrams await them, along with a lavish sadhya and a boat race.
India’s Sherpa Amitabh Kant, who launched the highly successful ‘Gods own country’ campaign, while he handled the tourism portfolio in the state government, has made sure that there is also chaya vallom (tea on the boat) or the backwater version of ‘chai pe charcha’.
Also awaiting the Sherpas and representatives from global agencies such as the IMF, the World Bank, OECD and the UN, is food from across the state. The spread ranges from the Nair cuisine from Travancore to Syrian Christian food from central Kerala and moplah delicacies from the Malabar region, which draws inspiration from Dutch and Portuguese food.
The mega show is part of a strategy to use G20 as a platform to showcase India’s vast tourism potential and also its soft power. Over the next four days a series of events, including cultural performances and a boat race, are lined up.
