Sheffield Wednesday star Lee Gregory has got his missing face mask back from a fan who found it on the pitch after the team’s dramatic play-off comeback win against Peterborough on Thursday.

The Owls went into Thursday’s semi-final second leg trailing 4-0 from the first game, but somehow turned the tie on its head, winning on penalties after claiming a 5-1 victory on the night.

Gregory, who scored the second goal of the game, played with a face mask following a recent injury he suffered in training, but lost the protective piece of equipment when fans invaded the pitch after the shootout win. This led to the club putting out an urgent appeal to supporters to help them find it before their play-off final.

‘Can you help!?’ they posted on Twitter on Sunday.

‘In the aftermath of our stunning comeback win on Thursday, Lee Gregory’s mask is missing!

‘The custom-built protective cover was near the dugout. Due to a short turnaround, we cannot replace in time for next week. Any ideas where it might be!?’

Just five minutes later they received a reply from a fan confirming that his dad had found the mask on the pitch.

‘Yes, my dad picked it up after the game! Dm me I’ll get it to him before Monday!’ he wrote next to a photo of the mask.

The grateful League One club responded by putting a picture of a Sheffield Wednesday shirt signed by Gregory alongside the caption: ‘A short road trip later for admin.’

Gregory has been a key player for Sheffield Wednesday this season, scoring 10 goals during the regular campaign before adding to his tally on Thursday.

He now looks set to lead the line in the final at Wembley on May 29 after recovering his face mask, with Sheffield Wednesday facing Barnsley in an all-Yorkshire affair for the chance to play in the Championship next season.
