Shahid Kapoor reveals director Priyadarshan dubbed his voice in Chup Chup Ke without telling him: ‘Ye kiski awaz hai?’

Actor Shahid Kapoor has revealed that the voice used for his character in Chup Chup Ke was dubbed and not his. Recently, while speaking with Netflix, Shahid read a comment online, “Can’t believe this is the same guy who used to do ‘Jabba Jabba’ once.” In Chup Chup Ke, Shahid essayed the role of a person who pretended to be mute. Recalling his role, the actor said that film’s director Priyadarshan had dubbed his voice without letting him know. Reacting to the comment, Shahid said, “Oh I know what you’re talking about.” He then added, “Just FYI, in case you didn’t know, that ‘Jabba Jabba’ voice was not my voice. I also reacted to it the same way the audience did because when I saw the film and at that time, I was a newcomer, so, zyada importance nahi milti jab aap newcomer hote ho (you don’t get much importance as a newcomer).”

The actor added, “Toh unhone mujhe bataye bina, because woh Priyadarshan ne film banayi thi, aur woh Chennai mei apni dubbing aur woh sab karte the. Toh wohin se unhone kisi ko leke woh ‘Dabba Dabba’ kisi aur se kara di (They dubbed my voice without telling me, Priyadarshan made the film and he used to do his dubbings in Chennai. So there itself he chose someone to dub ‘Dabba Dabba’).”

He also said, “Jab maine film dekhi toh (When I watched the film) I was looking at the film, I was like, ‘Ye kiski awaz hai (Whose voice is this)?’ and everyone was like, ‘Oh, he’s so funny!’ and I was like ‘Yeah but it’s not me’. I knew because I know what my voice sounds like.”

Chup Chup Ke, released in 2006, is a comedy-drama film. The story is adapted from the Malayalam film Punjabi House (1998). The film also stars Kareena Kapoor, Neha Dhupia, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Shakti Kapoor, Om Puri and Anupam Kher.

Meanwhile, Shahid was last seen in Jersey, helmed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur are also a part of the film, which is the Hindi remake of the Telugu film of the same name.

Shahid also has his digital debut series with filmmaker duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK in the pipeline. Titled Farzi, the series is co-written by Sita R Menon, Suman Kumar and Hussain Dalal. The series also features Vijay Sethupathi, Raashi Khanna, Kay Kay Menon, Regina Cassandra, Zakir Hussain, Bhuvan Arora, Amol Palekar, and Kubbra Sait.
