Shah Rukh Khan’s decision to shift Jawan’s release date has forced many Bollywood films to replan their releases, say trade experts and exhibitors – Exclusive | Hindi Movie News – Times of India
The announcement immediately forced producer Dinesh Vijan’s ‘Fukrey 3’ to reschedule its release date and shift to November.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh, who is usually the first individual to put out new release dates of films said, “‘Jawan’ ne sabko hila diya. The entire release chart has gone topsy turvy. Thanks to Shah Rukh Khan’s success with ‘Pathaan’, ‘Jawan’ is the biggest film right now. No one wants to clash with Atlee’s action drama. ‘Fukrey 3’ was supposed to release on the date that ‘Jawan’ will come out on. I think Ajay Devgn’s ‘Maidaan’ will also opt for another release date but we will to wait for producer Boney Kapoor for the official announcement.”
The trade is expecting more announcements of rescheduled release dates. The fans may get to hear of these in a day or two. Senior trade analyst Girish Wankhede said, “The announcement of the new date of September 7 by Gauri Khan and SRK on their social media handles has obviously caused a flutter in the entire film world. The June 2 release has been postponed by almost 3 months and other films, which were slated to release around early September and late August are busy finding new box office windows to accommodate their releases. Nobody wants to clash with SRK’s new found muscle and power. His 1000 crores, global dominion post ‘Pathaan’, is the reason behind the massive and sudden reshuffle in release dates. ‘Jawan’ will release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada and it boasts of high octane action with the Southern boost of having Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara in the cast. No wonder Fukrey 3 and Vicky Kaushal’s unnamed film reconsidered their release dates. Also Yodha and Adityam will have to rethink about their release dates, too.”
The toughest task for an exhibitor is to plan their calendar year according to preset release dates. Right now, thanks to Jawan’s rescheduling, the exhibition sector’s annual calendar is in a state of massive flux. Exhibitor Manoj Desai said, “It is too early to say whether this is a good decision or not. We’re talking about the film industry. Who knows who will change their release dates and to when? For some, this might be a blessing in disguise.”
But Desai admitted that the last minute change has created chaos for the planning process. He said, “Being an exhibitor, I am upset. Change of dates means we are unable to concentrate on which film might come up next. We are in a state of confusion because of this change in release dates.”
SRK has opted for the festive weekend of Janmashtami, which will be celebrated on September 6 and 7. A senior film producer said on condition of anonymity, “SRK’s selection of the new release date is a great sign. We’ve seen movies clashing on festive dates in the past. Fukery 3 would have never got a solo release. Had it come out on September 7, it would have squared off with some or the other release. It would have needed to look for a new date anyway. The new line up of movie releases, should help in bringing back regular cinema going habit for the audiences.”
