Sergio Ramos set discuss possible return to Spain team with Luis de la Fuente

PSG star Sergio Ramos ‘could be set for a shock recall to the Spain national team’ and ‘will meet with head coach Luis de la Fuente to discuss a potential inclusion in the squad for their Scotland clash’ next month

  • The PSG central defender has not made an international appearance since 2021
  • Ramos could be in line for a return to the national side for their Scotland clash
  • The defender will reportedly meet with Luis de la Fuente over the next week

Paris Saint-Germain defender Sergio Ramos could be set for a surprise return to the Spanish national team for their upcoming Euros qualifiers.

The veteran centre-back has not made an appearance for Spain’s first-team since March 2021, which came in a World Cup qualifier, and was left at home by Luis Enrique for the recent tournament in Qatar.

Despite this, Ramos has maintained good form for PSG and it’s led to a meeting with current boss de la Fuente, who may offer the defender a route back into the national side.

According to the Sun, Ramos will meet with the Spain boss this week to discuss a potential inclusion in their Euros qualifiers squad.

The national team will face off with Norway and Scotland next month, with the likelihood that the PSG star will be involved for the latter clash at Hampden Park.

The defender once stated: ‘I will never leave Spain, it is Spain that left me. I have always said I aim to play until I am 40.’

Ramos is the country’s all-time most capped player, with 180 appearances to date, yet was left at home for their recent World Cup run last month.

Despite his exclusion, the ex-Real Madrid centre-back did not announce his retirement from the international stage and has worked hard to return to the squad.

The 36-year-old has made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Parisian outfit this year and has helped them ensure their place at the summit of the Ligue 1 table.

The defender was part of the Spanish national teams that won the World Cup in 2010 and two Euros Championships in 2008 and 2012.

Ramos is also Spain’s joint-tenth all-time top goalscorer with 23 goals and will be hoping to close the gap on Emilio Butragueño – who has three strikes more.

Last month, de la Fuente took charge of the Spanish national team following the departure of Luis Enrique in the wake of their World Cup elimination.

Enrique was dismissed of his role as Spain boss on after the national side’s terrible World Cup campaign saw them get eliminated by Morocco in the last-16.

De la Fuente, who had been the Spanish U21 coach at the time, was offered the call-up to the first-team squad and was announced just days after Enrique’s dismissal.

In a statement, the RFEF wrote: ‘The RFEF has chosen Luis de la Fuente as the new absolute national coach.

‘The sports director, José Francisco Molina, has forwarded a report to the president, Luis Rubiales, in which he recommends the choice of the coach from La Rioja, until now the U-21 coach, to lead the new stage that begins after the World Cup in Qatar.’
