Selena Gomez Embraced Retro Glamour at the Critics Choice Awards
At tonight’s Critics Choice Awards in Los Angeles, Selena Gomez chose to match the red carpet, but she did anything but blend in. The star, whose Hulu series Only Murders in the Building is nominated for best comedy series this evening, ravished in red while channelling a Old Hollywood sensibility. She opted for retro glamour in a way that still felt current and deserving of a modern-day A-lister.
Gomez wore a custom, floor-length gown designed by Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière. The frock’s built-in cape and keyhole bust offered a hint of a throwback—something, say, Marilyn Monroe easily could have worn—but its simplicity and clean, unfussy lines proved that such a creation could be worn in any decade and still feel fresh. Gomez also accessorized it tastefully, eschewing any bold jewelry to allow the dress to truly shine.
Red is one of Gomez’s signature power colors. She’s worn red-hot gowns to the 2016 AMAs and to a Global Citizen event just last year, among other memorable moments. It’s always a bold move to pick a dress that’s the same color as the step and repeat or backdrop—you run the risk of blending in, not standing out—but as proven tonight, Gomez rose above the challenge and completely shined yet again.
