See All of This Year’s White House Holiday Decorations
Jill Biden has decked the halls.
Today, the first lady unveiled the grand holiday decorations at the White House to the public. Corresponding with the theme of “We The People”—the first line of the Constitution—each room is fantastically adorned with holiday accents that reflect the shared traditions of our diverse country. “As our country gathers for the holidays, traditions may vary, but our shared American values—a belief in possibility, optimism, and unity—endure season after season,” the president and first lady wrote in a welcome letter.
The Red Room is covered in candles, cranberries, as well as orchids, the light symbolic of hope and faith. Meanwhile, the East Room is filled with snow-covered trees, and its fireplace mantels feature scenes from the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as Shenandoah National Park. The holiday-ready pièce de resistance? An 18.5-foot Christmas tree from Auburn, Pennsylvania, hung with state bird ornaments from all 50 states and territories.
There’s also a gingerbread replica of the White House, a sugar-cookie recreation of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, as well as a menorah made from old White House wood that was discarded during the 1950s during a renovation. Finally, the Bidens added a number of personal touches: playful illustrations of the family pets—dog Commander and cat Willow—sit in the Vermeil Room, while family stockings hang in the State Dining Room.
All in all, there are over 83,000 lights, 77 trees, and 25 wreaths in this year’s display, which was put together by over 150 volunteers to make a veritable winter wonderland.
