Scottish wing Duhan van der Merwe scored a 55-yard try with a dazzling solo run during the Calcutta Cup meeting with England at Twickenham.
Fans on social media have been quick to call the move one of the best tries in rugby history, as the 27-year-old weaved his way past Steve Borthwick’s defenders before scoring.
Scotland faced England in their opening Six Nations game at Twickenham, and van der Merde’s try was the second for the visitors in a promising opening spell, although the hosts came back to lead 13-12 at half-time.
The sensational nature of the run was enjoyed by fans on social media, as it showcased some of the best skills that the rugby field has to offer.
One fan tweeted: ‘That really was one of THE great tries!’, while another wrote: ‘Best try I’ve seen in ages.’

While some hailed the positive nature of the mazing run, others were quick to criticise the tackling, as England’s players took to the field for their first half of action under new boss Borthwick.
One even highlighted that the defensive errors did not necessarily counteract the beauty of van der Merde’s run. They posted: ‘Some people are criticising the tackling, and maybe but his change of direction at full tilt with his size and speed is just so hard to do anything about.’
Others noted that both fans and greats of the game would have been proud to have scored the try.

Van der Merwe would also have the decisive contribution at the end of the match, with his second try putting Scotland back in the lead in the 74 minute.
Scotland sealed a 29-23 victory to win the Calcutta Cup for the third consecutive time against England.
