Casey Scheidegger is through to the final of the Sentinel Storage Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Scheidegger and her team from Lethbridge defeated Kelsey Rocque’s Edmonton rink 10-7 during the women’s provincial curling championship semifinal Saturday in Grande Prairie.
The 2018 Alberta winner Scheidegger will now face defending champion Laura Walker of Edmonton on Sunday with the victor representing the province at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Jan. 28-Feb. 6, in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Meanwhile, Calgary’s Kevin Koe awaits the winner of the men’s Boston Pizza Cup semifinal between Edmonton’s Ted Appelman and Calgary’s Jeremy Harty.
The six-time Alberta champion Koe cruised into Sunday’s final with a 10-3 win over Harty during Saturday’s Page 1-2 game.
Harty dropped into Saturday night’s semifinal against Appelman, who eliminated Edmonton’s Karsten Sturmay 7-1 in the Page 3-4 matchup.
The Boston Pizza Cup champion will represent the home team at the Tim Hortons Brier, March 4-13 in Lethbridge, Alta.
Although Rocque started the women’s semifinal with the hammer, Scheidegger jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Rocque’s last stone in the opening frame slid deep to give up a steal of two, and she conceded another pair of points in the following end when she tapped and rolled too far. Scheidegger swiped one more point in the third when Rocque attempted a tricky angle raise that missed the mark.
Rocque got on the board with a deuce in the fourth, however, it was also a missed opportunity as she had a draw for three that came up short of the house. Scheidegger replied right back in the fifth with an open hit for two points to re-establish the five-point advantage at 7-2.
After Rocque had another chance for three and settled for two in the sixth end, the missing point came back in the seventh as Scheidegger’s raise was no good and led to a single steal to make it 7-5. That was as close as Rocque would get to closing the gap though.
Scheidegger hit for three points in the eighth end although vice skip Cary-Anne McTaggart accidentally kicked one of their rocks sitting in the house. Team Rocque could have not let the third point count as the non-offending side, however, they chose not to remove it. Rocque tacked two points on the board in the ninth but conceded the match after that.
Walker, Scheidegger and Rocque all finished round-robin play with identical 6-1 records. Since they were also all tied 1-1 in head-to-head matchups, Walker received the bye to the final based on draw-to-the-button shootout scores.
