Samuel Ross’s Latest LVMH Collaboration Is With Acqua di Parma

Caught up with on a call, Ross said that his design for the Italian-founded house has been fundamentally influenced by his own experience designing A Cold Wall between design studios in London and Milan, from which the brand is distributed and manufactured. He added: “The question was how do I think about the ambiance of the sun, a feeling of like a sun-glaze across the cityscape between London to Milan: because I live that journey.” Of the finished products, he said: “I hope it’s very optimistic and beautiful to look at and enjoy.” One of his key starting points, he added, was to consider both the differences and affinities between British architect Richard Rogers and Italian Renzo Piano in order to conjure a fresh synthesis. 

Ross is amongst the many, many names that have been linked with the still-open position to succeed the much-missed Virgil Abloh as menswear designer at Louis Vuitton itself. However the designer, who plans to return for a second time to present his collection during Paris’s menswear fashion week next January, seems both fascinated and fulfilled to continue working with the group on this more ad hoc basis. He said: “It’s about finding ways to bridge with the brands in their portfolio to create a new, concentrated, and slightly more edgy or radical way of working. As a collaborator, while you’re still a partner, you have a lot more autonomy to be a catalyst for change.” Ross seems well suited to injecting considered jolts of relevance to these long-established heritage brands.
