Samsung announces new smartwatch processor ahead of Galaxy Watch 4 launch – Times of India
A day before the official unveiling of its new hardware lineup, South Korean tech giant Samsung has announced the processor that will power its upcoming smartwatch series — Galaxy Watch 4. The chipset — called Exynos W920 — supports the new unified wearable platform that has been co-developed by Samsung and Google.
Samsung Exynos W920 SoC: Specs and features
The new chipset that is set to power the Galaxy Watch 4 models, packs two Arm Cortex A55 cores and an Arm Mali G68 GPU. With this, Samsung claims that buyers will get 20% improved CPU performance and 10-times better graphics performance than its predecessor.
The company also claims that the Exynos W920 enables faster application launches and a more interactive eye-catching 3D graphical user interface (GUI) on a device’s qHD (960×540) display.
The size of the processor is also quite small, as per the company, and makes it possible to make the smartwatch house a large battery and sport a sleek design.
In order to offer the Always-on-display (AOD) for wearables, Samsung said that this wearable chipset comes with a dedicated low-power display processor, the Cortex-M55, which is said to reduce display power consumption under AOD mode when compared to its previous Exynos model.
In terms of connectivity, the Exynos W920 is embedded with a 4G LTE Cat.4 modem as well as a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 that will allow users to track speed, distance and elevation during outdoor activities.
