Salman Rushdie awarded with ‘Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award’, becomes first recipient – Times of India
The author was present at the event to receive the award, but his presence was kept a secret till he stood up to receive it. Obviously enough, Rushdie’s presence was kept a secret from the crowd, owing to the attack on him last year in New York which rendered him vision-less in his right eye and problems with a hand.
The danger to Rushdie’s life started majorly after the release of his book ‘Satanic Verses’ which was followed by a fatwa against him, threats and eventually the stabbing in August 2022, following which he was in hiding for major part of the year.
As reported by The Independent, Rushdie, after receiving the award said, “I apologise for being a mystery guest. I don’t feel at all mysterious. But it made life a little simpler.”
The Havel Center, formerly the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation, pays homage to the Czech playwright and president who emerged after the Communist regime’s fall in the late 1980s. Established in 2012, the center’s core aim is upholding Havel’s legacy of championing human rights and free expression. It serves as a testament to his commitment to these values, following his passing in 2011, by promoting his ideals and principles.
The author, in his speech, mentioned his friendship with Havel and how Havel supported him and his art during Rushdie’s time in hiding.
Just last month, Rushdie announced the release of his new book, ‘Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder’.
