Salman Khan’s ‘Lungi’ dance in ‘Yentamma’ song from ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ offends the South – Exclusive – Times of India

Salman Khan’s ‘Yentamma’ song-and-dance number from his forthcoming Eid release ‘Kiski Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ has offended South Indians for its bizarre stereotyping of actors in lungis dancing festively.
The choreography is problematic on many levels. Using the traditional lungi as a dance prop is not the same as using the towel as Salman did in ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karoge’, or more recent Ram Charan and NTR Jr with suspenders in ‘RRR’.

The veshti (lungi) is a sacred traditional mens’ wear in the South. You really can’t mess with the lungi and especially by trying to pass off a dhoti as a lungi as they’ve done in the ‘Yentamma’ song.
Retired Indian cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has called out the offensive dance moves on Twitter: “This is highly ridiculous and degrading our South Indian culture. This is not a LUNGI, THIS IS A DHOTI. A classical outfit which is being shown in a DISGUSTING MANNER.”

A leading Tamil-Hindi actor who doesn’t want to be named is even angrier than the cricketer. “What were they smoking while messing around with the veshti? Do they know how sacred the vesti is for South Indians? Salman toh chalo we can say he doesn’t know any better. But Venkatesh Daggubati and Ram Charan are Telugu South Indians. How could they participate in the disrespectful farce? And that’s not even a veshti they are fooling around with it. It is a dhoti worn like a veshti.”

A major filmmaker who had a fall-out with Salman after directing him says the star’s isolation from reality is responsible for this faux pas. “He doesn’t listen to anyone. He does whatever he wants to, and the others just comply blindly. He has no corrective elements to tell him when he is going wrong. There are only yes-men. And even if he had someone to correct him, he wouldn’t listen.”
