JOHANNESBURG – South African football is in mourning following the passing of long-time Mamelodi Sundowns administrator Alex Shakoane.

During his three decades with the Tshwane club, Shokoane served in various capacities, including two spells as communications officer and supporter mobilisation manager.

Flamboyant, charismatic, and a loyal servant of football – those are just some of the ways the football fraternity has described the Shakoane, whose death was confirmed last night by the club.

While no details about his passing have been revealed, it was reported Shakoane had been hospitalised since suffering a stroke.

Shakoane, or Mr Gold Fingers as he was widely known, was a loyal servant of football in Mamelodi, and was involved in Sundowns from its formative years in the 1970s, serving as spokesperson and marketing guru as well as being Patrice Motsepe’s right-hand man when he took over the Brazilians.

The charismatic official will be mostly remembered for his gold rings and necklaces, as well as the way he sold and marketed the club – and was a key figure in mobilizing Sundowns fans at stadiums.

The club said further details regarding his memorial and funeral service would be announced in due course.
