Ryan Mallett, ex-NFL Quarterback, dies at age of 35
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, Mallett died in an apparent drowning. Mallett, who hailed from Arkansas, had been working as a football coach at White Hall High School. The school district also issued a statement on its website, confirming his untimely demise. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek expressed deep sorrow, calling Mallett an “incredibly special person” in a tweet.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, a group of individuals was struggling to return to shore near the second sandbar. Mallett, later identified as one of the individuals, went under the water, and when he was pulled out, he was found unresponsive by the lifeguards.
Mallett was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Mallett began his football career at the University of Michigan before transferring to Arkansas for the remainder of his college tenure.
He was selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. Mallett appeared in four games during the 2012 season, completing 1 of 4 passes for 17 yards. Brady shared a tribute on his Instagram story, writing, “We lost a great man. Thank you for everything Ryan.” Julian Edelman, a former Patriots receiver, also tweeted his condolences, calling it a “tough one to swallow.”Mallett went on to make six starts in nine games with the Houston Texans and two starts in eight appearances with the Baltimore Ravens.
John Harbaugh, the head coach of the Ravens, paid tribute to Mallett on Twitter, recalling his love for his teammates and the joy he found in every day on the football field.
Mallett’s first NFL start came on November 16, 2014, when he led the Texans to a 23-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns. His first career touchdown pass was a 2-yard throw to defensive end J.J. Watt.
