Originally from Pontefract, West Yorkshire, Westerman started his career with Castleford Tigers in 2007 after graduating from junior club the Featherstone Lions.
He played at Castleford for three years until switching to Hull F.C. in 2011 in one of the highest transfer fees the club had ever paid., before moving to Warrington in 2015 for a three-year deal worth £150,000.
After a brief stint playing for Toronto Wolfpack in 2017 and returned to his old club Hull. F. C,. citing his love for the club and coach Lee Radford among the reasons despite enthusiasm from other clubs.
In 2019 while playing for Hull, Westerman shocked viewers when he slapped his dislocated knee back into place while lying prone on the floor, before playing on.
After his knee buckled beneath him following a tackle, Westerman was visibly in pain and cried out in agony.

But TV replays showed him quickly hit his crooked knee in an attempt to get it back into place.
He managed to carry on playing, however Hull FC fell to an 18-10 defeat in the derby clash.
In 2022, he returned to his first club Castleford Tigers on a two-year contract.
At the time, Westerman told the BBC: ‘Since I was a young kid, I have always supported Cas.

Social media users flocked to Twitter to joke about the graphic video that has sent the Internet into a frenzy
‘From being a kid and supporting them to now, where they are up there with some quality players, it is really exciting.
‘The standard is really high now and I just want to get there and play well for my hometown club next year.’
Since the graphic video appeared online yesterday, media users have quick to share memes about the potentially sordid affair.
Twitter user Harry pointed out that Westerman’s wikipedia page had been altered to include the line ‘He is known to frequent the alleyway next to Greggs Bakery in Pontefract town centre’.
Another said: ‘No matter how bad your Monday is at least you’re not Joe Westerman rocking up at training today.’
A third said: ‘By far the worst thing to come from the Joe Westerman situation is my own mother sending me a meme about it.’
