RTA Fall 2023 Menswear Collection

“Life is a game you just have to play. There are no rules for it,” Robert Liptak says of the inspiration behind his sophomore men’s collection for RTA. My mind jumps quickly to a dystopian Hunger Games situation, but Liptak assures me I’ve gone too dark. Despite the lookbook, which is shot on a Mad Max-worthy landscape and with styling that at times calls to mind Kill Bill, the game Liptak is inspired by is more playful. Fair enough. My nerves probably should have been soothed by the maze-printed T-shirts which have invisible ink activated by UV rays that show the path to safety. It was not that deep.

This influence is a nice continuation of Liptak’s first collection for RTA—pre fall 2023—which riffed on 1970s Las Vegas aesthetics and modern, oversized silhouettes. While those clothes called to mind blackjack games and Champagne corks, fall turns jigsaws, optical illusions, and mazes into patterns. “There are a lot of pieces where you don’t know what it is until you get closer to it,” Liptak says. Case in point: reversible pants that are terry cloth on one side and nylon on the other, for a sweatpant two-for-one.

The most lasting image is of the bright yellow acid wash denim moto jacket and cargos in look four. “That’s a long process to get to that. I wanted to take the denim into a completely different look,” Liptak says. He succeeded, and the result is something out of a simulation. In fact, given that all the looks are photographed on the same model in the same position against the same background, it’s almost like you’re dressing up a video game avatar before starting up the game.
