The Kansas City Royals are turning to someone with experience winning in smaller markets to fill their managerial opening by hiring Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro.

He replaces Mike Matheny, who was fired after three seasons without making the playoffs. The Royals were last in the AL Central with a 65-97 record this season and haven’t made the playoffs since their 2015 championship season.
Quatraro, 48, has spent the past four seasons as bench coach with the Rays and was a coach with Cleveland for three years before that. He had a minor-league career in the Rays organization as a catcher, and began coaching in 2002 after retiring.
“He’s adored among players, coaches and execs, and is regarded as the ideal type to shepherd the Royals’ young core,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote on Twitter. “TB and Cleveland — where Royals owner John Sherman once held a minority stake — are excellent models for small-market success. Quatraro knows both well.”
