Ronnie O’Sullivan criticised by Mark Allen after Judd Trump 147 snub

‘It takes just two seconds to show some respect’: Mark Allen criticises Ronnie O’Sullivan for snubbing Judd Trump’s stunning 147 break after the Rocket refused to leave his chair and offer congratulations in Champion of Champions final

  • Judd Trump made a maximum 147 break against Ronnie O’Sullivan on Sunday
  • But the Rocket snubbed the feat by refusing to shake Trump’s hand
  • O’Sullivan, who has 15 career 147s, has been widely criticised for his actions
  • Mark Allen accused him of disrespect and said it’s the first time it has happened
  • Stephen Hendry and Ken Doherty also said O’Sullivan was in the wrong

Mark Allen has hit out at Ronnie O’Sullivan for his apparent lack of sportsmanship after opponent Judd Trump made a stunning 147 break.

Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan refused to leave his chair to shake Trump’s hand after his maximum in the Champion of Champions final on Sunday.

Trump cleared 15 reds and 15 blacks to send the crowd in Bolton into raptures, but O’Sullivan failed to acknowledge the feat.

Trump achieved the 147 at 6-1 down in the best-of-19-frame final, which O’Sullivan ultimately won 10-6 to win the title for the fourth time.

Allen suggested it was the first time ever an opponent has not got out of their chair to acknowledge a 147 break, joining a chorus of criticism against O’Sullivan.

‘Glad @kendoherty1997 [Ken Doherty] mentioned in studio @ronnieo147 [O’Sullivan] not shaking @juddtrump hand when making the max,’ Allen tweeted.

‘I know it’s not a rule you have to but I’m confident saying it’s the first time it’s ever happened. 2 secs to show some respect isn’t asking much from someone so many admire.’

Doherty and Stephen Hendry were part of the punditry team on the night and also slammed O’Sullivan for his lack of etiquette.

Seven-time champion Hendry said: ‘Look, no one took more displeasure in their opponents doing things well against them more than me.

‘But shake the guy’s hand. He has made a 147, it’s in the final and you are 6-1 up. Shake the guy’s hand. It was incredible.

‘When I made the other one against him he had to shake my hand…because it was the end of the match.’

O’Sullivan’s actions are even more bemusing given that fact that he’s made a record 15 maximum breaks himself.

Irish snooker legend Doherty said: ‘It was a magnificent break from Judd, one of the best 147s you will see. There were a lot of really tough shots and under such pressure at 6-1 behind.

‘I was a little bit surprised that Ronnie didn’t come out and shake Judd’s hand and congratulate him – there was no reaction from him – it was like it was just another frame.’

O’Sullivan was asked about his prospects of winning a record eighth world title at the Crucible in the spring after getting on a roll at the start of the season.

‘I’ve been on a roll for 30 years,’ he joked. ‘I’ve got seven of them so I suppose eight sounds good. I could always do with another one I suppose.’

O’Sullivan added that he needs big audiences to maintain his interest in the sport. ‘Most of the tournament these days we play in front of 30-40 people, playing lower-ranked players.

‘It’s very demotivating, and at my age I need to play in front of an audience like this, otherwise I’m going to be flat. I tend to do better in these type of tournaments.’

Just last month, O’Sullivan revealed that he is no longer excited about playing snooker and does not care if he plays well anymore.

O’Sullivan suffered a shock 4-3 defeat to David Grace in the second round of the Northern Ireland Open on Wednesday, and opened up about his lack of motivation after the loss.

‘The job ain’t worth the stress and the hassle. Sometimes a loss is a blessing in disguise, it just allows me to do other stuff,’ he told the BBC.

‘I quit mentally about eight years ago and I just take what I can from the sport. It’s a good platform for me, allows me to do other stuff and gives me a lot of freedom.’
