Robbie Savage fights back the tears live on TV as his son Charlie scores his first senior goal

Robbie Savage fought back tears live on BT Sport after seeing that his son Charlie scored his first goal in senior football.

Manchester United sent the 19-year-old out on loan to League One strugglers Forest Green Rovers in January to ensure he was afforded more pitch time as part of his development. 

The youngster made his fifth appearance for Duncan Ferguson’s side on Saturday as they hosted Bristol Rovers and scored in the 12th minute of the game – which was swiftly spotted on BT’s score ticker by his dad. 

Savage, who was on duty for BT Sport Score, a live show keeping across scores throughout the leagues, couldn’t help but celebrate after seeing the news of his son’s goal. 

Savage screamed with delight as viewers were being given an update from Leicester’s clash with Chelsea and he was soon overcome with emotion.

The camera instantly panned to Savage and he was asked: ‘What happened?’. To which he replied: ‘Yessss! My boy has scored!

Savage was then seen fist pumping the air while saying: ‘My boy. Come on. Go on my boy. Yes! What a goal as well. I’ve just seen it come up. My boy. Wow.’

When asked how he was feeling by presenter Jules Breach, Savage said: ‘Wow it’s emotional that.

‘That’s class man. After everything he has been through as well. Wow. I am really proud of him. I love that. Go on.’ 

Charlie’s goal gave Forest Green the lead after just 12 minutes as he found the back of the net with a left-footed strike. 

However, it wasn’t enough to secure a win for Forest Green as Bristol Rovers came from behind to beat Ferguson’s side 3-1.

He made his senior debut for United in a Champions League game in December 2021

As a result, Forest Green are sitting bottom of League One – having failed to secure a win in their last 15 games. 

Nevertheless, Savage remains immensely proud of his son – who made his senior debut for United in a Champions League game against Young Boys in December 2021. 

Speaking on the commentary at the time of that match, Savage said: ‘Coming on for Manchester United is Charlie Savage for Juan Mata. Wow. I never believed I would say those words.

‘What a proud day for my boy. All the hard work. What a day for me, his mother, his nana, his grandparents and most importantly for Charlie Savage. I’m so proud of him, Darren. It’s an amazing moment for him.’
