Rihanna Puts a New Twist on an Iconic Y2K Top
If you grew up during the 2000s, then you’ll remember the iconic tube top (and likely how you’d constantly have to fuss with it in order to keep it from falling down.) The top—which first gained momentum in the ’90s thanks to stars like Sarah Jessica Parker—went on to dominate the Y2K era. They came in fun colors and striped patterns, and were often paired with jeans and strappy heels. Like so much from that era, the style is now coming back, with support from Rihanna.
Heading out to dinner in the City of Light, Rihanna put forward a new twist on the tube top by choosing a look fresh off JW Anderson’s fall 2023 runway. She wore the label’s fuzzy brown style, complete with a kangaroo pouch pocket that further accentuated her baby bump. (Riri’s signature move; remember her first pregnancy reveal?). For a more modern take on the tube top, she paired it with streamlined blue trousers with a frayed hemline—also from the fall 2023 show—as well as a faux fur coat, discreet nude stilettos, and gold jewelry. Her monogrammed Louis Vuitton bag, however, did nod back to the aughts, when big, flashy logos were all the rage.
So, does this mean you need to go run out and buy a tube top as well? If you do, follow Rihanna’s lead and remember to style in a way that reads more 2023 than 2003.
