Richie Shazam Took On New York Pride in Style
Last weekend’s New York Pride had no shortage of fabulous festivities to attend, whether it was the many glitzy fashion parties (brands such as Diesel and J.Crew held mega bashes), the Pride Island event (where Christina Aguilera performed), or the iconic annual Pride Parade. The weekend calendar called for an impressive statement wardrobe. Pride practically doubles as a fashion show, after all. Someone who understood this assignment particularity well? Model Richie Shazam, who navigated the weekend in style and captured moments exclusively for Vogue.
As a native New Yorker, Shazam knows how to have a successful Pride weekend. The model says this year’s Pride affair was all about “celebrating our power, our voices, and our resilience. No matter what adversity stands in our way, we will break it down collectively.” To do so, she hit up a handful of events with her close friends such as Julia Fox and Briana Andalore. “I am super grateful to celebrate with my incredible chosen family and celebrate each other,” says Shazam. “Realizing that our existence is a form of protest and we must continue to create space for one another.”
The headliner for Shazam’s weekend was the debut of her new Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance campaign. The model attended a dinner at the Edition to celebrate the launch, and boarded a whole JPG-themed parade float for the Sunday march. “To celebrate, dance, and scream on the Jean Paul Gaultier float with my family was honestly one of the best experiences of my life and something that I will never forget, especially being a native New Yorker and being with my people,” says Shazam. “Having our faces supersized on the double-decker bus was such an insane sensation.”
It was an even more special moment to see the campaign on such a big scale, given Shazam photographed and directed the campaign herself. “We put so much incredible work into bringing it to life,” says Shazam. “Grateful to our JPG family for giving us this opportunity both behind the camera and to star in the campaign; it is vital to give trans artists the platform to visually tell our stories and inspire our community, that they too can do this.”
The celebrations didn’t stop there, however. Shazam also attended the Ladyland Festival and hosted a special Instagram Live conversation at The Centre downtown about pride and mental health. Through it all, Shazam chose colorful looks for the events, all of which were strong and upbeat. “My looks were beautiful, intricate Jean Paul Gaultier silhouettes that were strong statements,” says Shazam. Among other looks, she sported a Y/Project x Jean Paul Gaultier suit printed with a buff optical-illusion body over it. “My sister Briana Andalore styled me and my dear friends John Novotny and Julian Stoller did my hair and makeup,” says Shazam. “Bringing my inner Gaultier doll to life!”
