JOHANNESBURG – International clothing company H&M is getting a sustainable, gender-neutral boost as it announces a collaboration with prominent South African fashion designer Rich Mnisi.
The joint print project collection will be available at certain H&M locations in South Africa, as well as online fashion outlet Superbalist, from 27 July.
Original streetwear styles will be combined with recognisable Rich Mnisi images, sporting high-quality basics in oversized, loose sizes. Styles will be available in six seasonal hues: an autumnal palette of warm brown, orange, and beige tones, as well as a mixed black and grey. The line comes in sizes XS to XL and is gender neutral.
The collection is made of materials that are more sustainably sourced, using either 100% in-conversion cotton, or cotton cultivated by organic farmers switching.
Mnisi is one of Africa’s most active and successful artists. The Tsonga creative director and fashion designer came from a family of powerful, matriarchal role models, and grew up with a strong pop culture obsession.
Mnisi said the collaboration with H&M would increase the accessibility of he and his team’s designs.
“We wanted to increase the number of people who could access our designs, because they have been so vocally supportive of my team and I, as well as the work we do with this brand,” Mnisi said.
