Rich get richer as Kliff Kingsbury joins national title contender

Kliff Kingsbury is set to join Lincoln Riley’s staff at USC, bolstering the Trojans’ offensive juggernaut as they push for national title contention.

In 2018, Kliff Kingsbury spent approximately a month as USC’s offensive coordinator before leaving the Trojans to take the Arizona Cardinals head coaching gig.

As fate would have it, being fired by the Cardinals has opened the door for Kingsbury to coach at USC afterall.

Kingsbury is going to join Lincoln Riley’s staff at USC as a Senior Offensive Analyst, according to Tom Pelissero and Bruce Feldman.

Kliff Kingsbury joining USC will make an incredible offense more ridiculous

USC already had Riley, one of football’s top offensive minds, and Caleb Williams, the reigning Heisman winner. In Year 1, Riley and Williams produced 41.4 points per game (USC averaged 28.7 the year before). It’s scary to think they could get even better with Kingsbury joining the show.

Kingsbury may not have worked out as a head coach, he was fired after going 28-37 in Arizona, but there’s never been a doubt about his ability to field an offense. His input in Los Angeles could make a second Heisman Trophy season for Williams all the more realistic.

Of course, the Trojans biggest problem this offseason wasn’t offense. Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has come under fire for the pathetic way USC’s defense closed out the 2022 season. They gave up 46 points to Tulane while losing the Cotton Bowl despite an electric performance from Williams playing on one hamstring.

More offense could help USC avoid a loss or two in 2023, but it’s the defense that’ll have to get sorted out if Riley wants to compete for a national title.

Then again, if the Trojans average 50 points, this could be the biggest recruiting job at USC this year.
