Report: Padres’ Machado intends to opt out of 10-year contract after 2023 season
San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado saw the amount of money thrown around during MLB free agency this past off-season, and he wants a piece of the action.
On Friday, Machado told Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post that he intends to opt out of the remaining five years of his 10-year, $300 million contract at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

“There’s a lot of money out there,” Machado told Janes. “As a player about to opt out, it’s pretty good to see.”
This news comes just over a week after a report from The Athletic surfaced that the Padres were expected to explore a contract extension with the two-time Gold Glove winner that would surpass the $300 million deal he signed in prior to the 2019 season.
Is this recent development just a ploy by Machado as extension talks heat up prior to Opening Day? We will have to wait and see.
Last year, the 30-year-old had his most productive season with the Padres, blasting 32 home runs and knocking in 102 RBIs on his way to finishing second in NL MVP voting.
Machado is expected to team up with Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the Dominican Republic at the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
