The National Women’s Soccer League is in advanced discussions to expand with three new teams in Boston, Utah and the San Francisco Bay Area, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The teams in Boston and the Bay Area are set to pay around $50 million in franchise fees. Owners in Utah will pay somewhere between $2 million and $5 million due to an arrangement agreed upon when the original franchise, the Utah Royals, folded back in 2020.
Boston was previously home to an NWSL team as well — the Boston Breakers were part of the league for the first five years of its existence, before folding in 2018.
The new teams in Utah and the Bay Area are expected to start playing in 2024, while the Boston team would launch sometime further into the future.
The NWSL is currently made up of 12 teams. The most recent expansions, the San Diego Wave FC and Angel City FC, joined in 2020 and begun play in 2022.
The league opens its 11th season in March.
