Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel has reportedly coached his final game with the team and is expected to be fired, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
After the game, Vogel said that the team has not communicated anything to him about his future and wouldn’t open up about his status.
“My reaction is I haven’t been told (anything) and I’m going to enjoy tonight’s game,” Vogel said when asked about the report. “Celebrate what these young guys did in terms of scratching and clawing and getting back in this game. We’ll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow.”
Malik Monk said he has Vogel to thank for being with the team this season.
“He gave me a chance,” Monk said. “This was the only team that called me in the offseason. I have nothing bad to say about him. All praise goes to him. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have a chance to play basketball. I probably wouldn’t be here, so kudos to Frank.”
The Lakers had a disappointing season finishing 33-49 and missing out on the play-in tournament despite expectations that the team could compete for an NBA title. This comes after Vogel led Los Angeles to an NBA championship in his first season in charge.
In his three seasons with the Lakers, Vogel went 127-98 after replacing Luke Walton. Vogel’s replacement will be the team’s fifth different head coach in the last 10 seasons.
