The San Diego Padres and veteran starting pitcher Cole Hamels agreed to a minor-league deal on Thursday afternoon, per FanSided’s Robert Murray and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

The 39-year-old Hamels has only thrown in one game since 2020, pitching 3.1 innings for the Atlanta Braves before being forced to the IL in the pandemic-shortened season.
He last signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021 but was ruled out for the season after his shoulder flared up shortly after signing.
Hamels has undergone surgeries on his left shoulder, right knee and left foot over the past year but has worked his way back and worked out for teams on Jan. 27 in Texas.
The Padres continue to add to their rotation depth after signing Michael Wacha earlier this week and now hope Hamels will be able to pitch his way into the mix.
The San Diego native has thrown 2,698 career innings across 15 seasons, posting a 3.43 ERA while striking out 2,560 hitters. He also was the MVP of the 2008 NLCS and World Series when the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays in five games in 2008.
