Report: Blue Jays expected to trade a catcher during off-season
The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to trade a catcher this off-season with the team having an abundance of talent at the position, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported on Tuesday.
Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk split duties behind the plate this past season, and the emergence of Gabriel Moreno provides the Blue Jays with options at the position.
Jansen hit .260/.339/.516 with a career-high 15 home runs and 44 RBI in 72 games this season. The 27-year-old dealt with a number of injuries, including a fractured finger and a strained oblique.
Kirk had a breakout season, slashing .285/.372/.415 with 14 home runs and 63 RBI in 139 games. The 24-year-old is under team control until the end of the 2026 season while Jansen will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.
Moreno appeared in 25 games for the Blue Jays this past season, slashing .319/.356/.377 with a home run and seven RBI. The 22-year-old also showed his versatility as a defender, spending most of his time at catcher while also making appearances at second base, third base and left field.
