Remembering Kalpana Lajmi who was ruined in love | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

If the vastly talented Kalpana Lajmi had lived she would have been 69 today, and she would probably be planning multiple projects simultaneously including of course a bio-pic on the love of her life Bhupen Hazarika.

For many artistes, love can be an extremely edifying experience. Kalpana, regrettably, was ruined by love. There was an age difference of more than 30 years between them. And Bhupen was married with children.
It didn’t matter to Kalpana. From the moment Kalpana met Bhupen she was his Radha and he her Krishna. It was a love beyond sanity and age barriers.
“I don’t know what it is between us. From the time I met Bhupen my life changed completely. I cannot imagine a life without him. I know it is not right for someone to give so much of oneself in a relationship. But you must understand this is not an ordinary love affair. I am bonded to Bhupen beyond one life,” she once said in an interaction.
When Hazarika fell ill mortally, she spent every single penny she had saved, for his hospital bills. When seven years later, Kalpana herself fell ill she had no money left for her own medical care. Some friends pitched in. Eventually they faded away. She was left to die on her own.
During the last conversation with Kalpana, this writer asked if she had any regrets about her blind love she said, “None at all. My love for him was unconditional. If I had to change anything, I’d only wish we had more time together. I had just started to get to know him when he left me. So what if I don’t have money for my health care. I will happily die and join him.”
It is interesting that Kalpana wanted to make a film on the undying love between filmmaker Chetan Anand and his muse Priya Rajvansh. Like Kalpana, Priya too was ruined in love.
