Red Sox officially place Chris Sale on IL; recall No. 3 prospect Brayan Bello
On Friday, the Boston Red Sox officially placed ace Chris Sale on the 15-day injured list with a fractured left pinkie finger.
In just his second start of the 2022 season, Sale suffered a grizzly finger injury on July 17 against the New York Yankees after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Aaron Hicks. Sale underwent surgery the following day, but the Red Sox waited until Friday to place him on the IL.
While there’s no timetable for his return, the Red Sox expect Sale to retake the mound this season.
The 33-year-old has had trouble staying healthy over the last few seasons, making only 14 starts since 2020.
In his lone completed start this season, Sale went five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing just three hits while striking out five.
To take Sale’s spot on the active roster, the Red Sox recalled their No. 3 ranked prospect, starting pitcher Brayan Bello.
Bello’s made his major league debut earlier this season for the Red Sox, struggling in two separate outings against the Rays. He allowed nine earned runs off 13 hits, posting a robust 10.13 ERA in 8.0 innings.
In 16 games between Triple-A Worcester and Double-A Portland, Bello posted a 10-4 record with a 2.35 ERA.
