Real Madrid showed their support for the people of Ukraine ahead of Saturday night’s La Liga fixture with Real Sociedad.
Both sets of players lined up behind a sign reading ‘We are all with Ukraine’ and another banner with the same message was draped over the stand facing the tunnel from where the players had emerged.
‘We give all our support to the people of Ukraine today,’ said the stadium announcer.
Real Madrid’s Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin joined the rest of the Madrid and Real Sociedad players in a combined team photo ahead of kick-off. ‘Our keeper Lunin represents all the people suffering in the war’ continued the speaker.
Football teams across Europe have been showing their support this week as fighting in Ukraine enters its second week.
Leicester and Leeds gathered around the centre-circle at kick-off for an impeccably-observed minute’s applause to show solidarity with Ukraine, after posing with a ‘Football Stands Together’ banner.
The Foxes are making a physical difference too, teaming-up with the British and Ukrainian Red Cross to raise funds and supplies to send to the besieged capital, Kyiv – where locals sheltering underground are running out of essentials.
For their game against Chelsea, Burnley donned warm-up shirts with the words ‘Football Stands United – No War’ across them, after they welcomed Ukrainians from the local area to Turf Moor for the defeat against Leicester in midweek.
There was also a minute’s applause in solidarity with Ukraine before kick-off.

Ralph Hassenhuttl’s Southampton side were on the road this weekend but travelling fans who arrived for the clash against Aston Villa found yellow and blue scarves on their seat, after the club had 3,000 made specially.
Liverpool fans were keen to show their support for those in Ukraine and cameras picked up a ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ message on a Ukraine flag, held by fans in the home end.
The two teams gathered alternately around the centre circle for a show of solidarity before kick-off, where they led a minute’s applause.
Fans soon burst into a rousing rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ while a ‘Football Stands Together’ message dominated the big screens.
