Rare copy of Harry Potter auctioned for £8,000 – Times of India

JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, was published in 1997. Now, 25 years later, a rare edition of the first book in the Harry Potter series which has never been released to the public was auctioned recently for £8,000 (approximately INR 8,04,680).

The rare leather-bound Harry Potter book is signed by Rowling. It is one of the 15 editions which were published by Bloomsbury for a competition to mark the 15th anniversary of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ in 2012.

The competition had asked Potter fans to express and explain why they loved the Harry Potter books in a letter. Fifteen lucky winners would win the rare book.

Chloe Esslemont, who was 16-years-old back then, was one of the lucky winners who received the rare Harry Potter edition. Now, 10 years later, she decided to sell the rare copy along with her original competition entry which won her the award. As per BBC, ‘She said she had “kept the book wrapped up in the attic for years” but had decided to part with it as “the money would be useful now”‘.

The book was sold by Hansons Auctioneers. “Technically, this is the rarest Harry Potter book I have ever handled — and I have assessed hundreds,” book expert Jim Spencer said on Hansons official website.

Meanwhile, it is noted that another rare first edition copy Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ was sold for £69,000 in March 2022.
