Rank outsider with 200-1 odds Lizzie Jean backed by trainer Ivan Furtado to ‘improve’
Rank outsider with 200-1 odds Lizzie Jean backed to hold her own by trainer Ivan Furtado, despite being ‘thrown into deep water’ at Cazoo St Leger in Doncaster
- Horse Lizzie Jean is rated at 200-1 going into Cazoo St Leger on Saturday
- Trainer Ivan Furtado will be disappointed if the horse does not win listed race
- He admitted that they are ‘throwing her in deep water’ but wants improvement
Trainer Ivan Furtado says rank outsider Lizzie Jean will not disgrace herself in Saturday’s Cazoo St Leger at Doncaster despite her 200-1 odds.
The daughter of Nathaniel, who only cost 5,000gns, has yet to race on turf and secured her second win in five races when storming to a seven-and-a-half-length win on the all-weather in a modest handicap at Southwell.
Saturday’s opponents will be a different league but Furtado has pleasant memories of raiding the St Leger meeting with a cheap buy after winning last season’s Group Three Sceptre Stakes with Just Beautiful, who cost only 8,000gns.
Trainer Ivan Furtado will be really disappointed if Lizzie Jean does not win a listed race
Furtado said: ‘It is a massive step up but I don’t think she will disgrace herself. I will be really disappointed is she can’t at least win a Listed race and we will find out if she is a group race filly.
‘We are convinced she will stay the trip and turf should not be a problem.
‘We think she is quite decent. She is by far the best we have got and her time at Southwell was good.
‘We are throwing her in deep water but she should improve again.’
The 11 entries for the St Leger are headed by Charlie Appleby-trained odds-on favourite New London. Frankie Dettori rides Ralph Beckett’s supplementary entry Haskoy.
