Rangers in ‘fresh push’ for Connor Goldson deal with John Souttar considered as replacement
RANGERS are ready to make a fresh push to tie down Connor Goldson on a new contract, according to reports.
However, the Ibrox side will make a contingency plan for the possibility the Englishman leaves for free in the summer – with Hearts defender John Souttar very much on their radar.
Negotiations between Goldson and the Ibrox club have been ongoing so far this season, but an agreement has yet to be reached.
The 29-year-old has been a vital cog in the Rangers team for several years now, under Steven Gerrard and now Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
While he can now enter pre-contract talks with any other interested clubs as he enters the final six-months of his contract, Rangers are said to be relaxed about the situation – and they’re not looking to cash in this January.
The Daily Record report that the Ibrox side are preparing to make a renewed effort to tie down the centre-half.
The report states that Rangers want a breakthrough to be made, but their main focus lies with retaining the title, and securing the automatic Champions League qualification that it will bring.
So with that said, it’s believed Rangers would rather lose Goldson for free in the summer than for the final run-in if he were to leave.
If that situation were to happen, the club are looking at replacements.
Souttar is under consideration by van Bronckhorst.
The Scotland international has already received a pre-contract offer from Blackburn, with other clubs ready to act too.
