Rangers finalizing trade for Cardinals starter Jordan Montgomery

The Texas Rangers are continuing their aggressive pursuit of pitching at the trade deadline by reportedly finalizing a trade for St. Louis Cardinals left-handed starter Jordan Montgomery.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first to report the deal, which also sees reliever Chris Stratton go to Texas. The Cardinals will receive infielder Thomas Saggese, right-hander Tekoah Roby and left-hander John King.

The 30-year-old Montgomery is a free agent after this season and with the Cardinals well outside the playoff picture, he was considered a top trade candidate.

The move comes hours after the Rangers announced the acquisition of ace Max Scherzer from the Mets. The Rangers entered play Sunday first in the AL West with a 60-45 record and are looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Montgomery is 6-8 with a career-best 3.37 ERA (previous best was 3.48 last year) this season and his best months have been June and July.

The Cardinals acquired Montgomery for the Yankees in a trade for Harrison Bader last August.

Montgomery then avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $10-million deal with the Cardinals in the off-season.

The Yankees selected Montgomery in the fourth round (122nd overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft.
