CAPE TOWN – With just 21 days left before the start of the Netball World Cup, the City of Cape Town says it’s more than ready to host the tournament.
The Netball World Cup trophy has finally arrived in the city and will stay at least until the tournament wraps up on the 6th of August.
This is the first time the event is being hosted on African soil, with Cape Town being the sole venue for the tournament.
Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Anroux Marais said the event is expected to boost the province and the metro’s economy, adding that hosting the tournament has created opportunities for young girls in the city.
“I want to urge everyone to rally behind our Spar Proteas, they’re really a wonderful team. They are just the best and we will keep the cup here in South Africa, in Cape Town, ” said Marais.

Marais handed the trophy to City of Cape Town Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews on Friday.
The Cape Town trophy tour will kick off at the Tygervalley Shopping Centre on Saturday morning.
Andrews said he hopes the trophy can remain in South Africa.
“You’re most welcomed to also enjoy all that Cape Town has to offer, but more importantly also extend your stay long after the tournament has concluded, and our girls have become victorious,” said Andrews.
