Manipur is in the grip of violence for almost two months now with central forces controlling the situation in the state. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will visit Manipur on 29-30 June, K C Venugopal said on Tuesday. Venugopal added that Rahul Gandhi will interact with civil society representatives in Manipur and will also visit the relief camps.
“Sh. @RahulGandhi ji will be visiting Manipur on 29-30 June. He will visit relief camps and interact with civil society representatives in Imphal and Churachandpur during his visit,” K C Venugopal said in a tweet.
“Manipur has been burning for nearly two months, and desperately needs a healing touch so that the society can move from conflict to peace. This is a humanitarian tragedy and it is our responsibility to be a force of love, not hate,” he added.
The visit by Rahul Gandhi comes as the ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur spiraled into large-scale conflict with insurgent groups running their missions at the expense of innocent lives. More than 130 people have lost their life since 3 May and the Opposition is demanding the imposition of President’s rule in the state.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened an all-party meeting on Saturday and gave them a detailed picture of the efforts taken by the state and central government to restore peace in the state. The government has deployed around 36,000 security personnel in the state and 40 IPS officers are also monitoring the situation in Manipur.

Indian Army on Sunday appealed to the people of Manipur to stop unwarranted interference in their operations as it is detrimental to the timely response by security forces. The appeal came hours after a women-led mob of around 1,500 people forced Indian Army to release 12 cadres of the insurgent group Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).
“Women activists in Manipur are deliberately blocking routes and interfering in the operations of security forces. Such unwarranted interference is detrimental to the timely response by security forces during critical situations to save lives and property. The Indian Army appeals to all sections of the population to support our endeavours in restoring peace. Help us to help Manipur,” the Spear Corps of the Indian Army said in a tweet.
