PSG chief Leonardo insists the club have ‘good possibilities’ to extend Kylian Mbappe’s contract
PSG sporting director Leonardo insists the club have ‘good possibilities’ to extend Kylian Mbappe’s contract despite Champions League opponents Real Madrid being able to sign him for FREE
- Kylian Mbappe’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire in summer 2022
- Clubs outside France can therefore sign him on a free transfer from January
- The forward, 22, has so far refused to extend his contract with the French giants
- Mbappe has previously talked up a move to Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid side
Paris Saint-Germain chief Leonardo has insisted the club have ‘good possibilities’ to keep prodigy Kylian Mbappe at the club despite his deal expiring next summer.
The 22-year-old forward has scored 145 goals in 194 appearances in all competitions since he became the second most expensive player of all time after moving from Monaco in 2018, and is widely seen as one of the best players in the world.
And on Sunday, PSG sporting director Leonardo told JDD that he was confident about the forward extending his contract, as well as discussing his ‘very direct relationship’ with the Mbappe family.

The French club’s sporting director (above) said they had ‘good possibilities’ for a new deal
He said: ‘It’s a very special situation because we are talking about the best player in the world who is coming to the end of his contract. We can say that there were times when we discussed more warmly, but that is part of building a relationship.
‘People will think that we say that because we want to prolong it but it is beyond the interest of the club. At 22 years old, almost 23, Kylian has reached an incredible maturity.
‘It’s a complicated situation in the sense that we would like him to stay all his life and that we have to respect that (the family’s position). I think we still have good possibilities (to extend it). I believe in it.’
Mbappe’s contract expires next summer and he could move to Real Madrid on a free transfer
Mbappe’s contract expires at the end of the season, which means from January clubs outside France can approach to sign him on a free transfer in the summer.
Having so far refused to put pen to paper on a new deal at the Parc des Princes, he is expected to leave, with Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid thought to be leading the race for his signature.
Earlier this week, Leonardo gave a less-than-convincing update on the contract saga, saying ‘we will see’.
