Projected CFP rankings Week 2: Michigan State’s loss is great news for Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners should be grateful that the Michigan State Spartans choked against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday.

After an 8-0 start, it really seemed like the Michigan State Spartans would be able to introduce some chaos in the College Football Playoff rankings. Unfortunately for them, they hit a perfect trap game, losing to the unranked Purdue Boilermakers by a score of 40-29.

While the win looks great for Purdue and it helps make the path to the Big Ten Championship Game a little easier for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines, it actually benefits Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners.

Oklahoma has looked rough all season and, even though the Sooners are unbeaten, many doubt just how good they actually are. With Michigan State losing to an unranked foe, Oklahoma has a very real shot to jump into the College Football Playoff this year.

Here’s what the College Football Playoff committee rankings could look like Tuesday evening.

Projected CFP rankings: Oklahoma rises by virtue of Michigan State losing

  1. Georgia Bulldogs
  2. Alabama Crimson Tide
  3. Oregon Ducks
  4. Ohio State Buckeyes
  5. Cincinnati Bearcats
  6. Michigan Wolverines
  7. Oklahoma Sooners
  8. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  9. Oklahoma State Cowboys
  10. Michigan State Spartans

All the Sooners need to do is win out at this point. That’s all they really can control. Assuming Georgia is actually as good as it looks right now, the Bulldogs should be able to take care of Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, which would create a nice, clean route for Oklahoma to move right on up into the top four for the playoffs.

Oklahoma will almost certainly get some help from a couple of teams in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes could potentially run into a couple of roadblocks in the form of the Spartans and the Wolverines. Playing the two teams in back-to-back weeks will be a tricky thing to do. If Ohio State stumbles there, the Sooners will almost certainly benefit greatly.
