Priyanka Chopra receives flak for ‘activism of convenience’ after post on Iran protest; Twitterati say actress ignores similar issues rampant in India – Times of India

Actress Priyanka Chopra, on Friday, made headlines when she lent her support to the “courageous women” of Iran and encouraged everyone to “add your voice to this critical movement.”

While many in India have lauded the actress for taking a stand, there were many others who asked,”Has anyone heard Priyanka Chopra speak up on any pressing issue in India?”

Going by the latest Twitter trends, the actress has been on the receiving end for her alleged “activism of convenience.”

Calling the actress a ‘hypocrite’ for not speaking up during the hijab row in the country, another trending tweet read, “@priyankachopra your activism of convenience is pukeworthy. This means nothing when you choose to look away from the plight of hijabi women in India who are denied education for wearing a piece of cloth over their head, harassed by hindutva goons and state. You are a Hypocrite!”

Another said, “Priyanka Chopra’s concern for Iranian women is hugely appreciated, but her silence on Bilkis Bano and the state enabled persecution of Muslims, especially marginalised women in her home country, India is worth introspection?”

“Celebrities can’t gain woke points by speaking about issues outside of their country, while simultaneously ignoring similar issues that are rampant in India,” said another.

A viral tweet read, “Priyanka Chopra comes out in support of everyone except Indians.”

However, fans of the actress came out in her defence saying, “Priyanka Chopra always takes a stand on issues happening in India and always let people know her home so it’s so upsetting when her people can’t just go to her page or research all that she do. Stop trying to drag her down everytime she’s doing good etc.”

Ashoke Pandit, also applauded the actress for taking a stand in a tweet that read, “Kudos to actor #PriyankaChopra ji for coming out in support of Iranian women who have been protesting over the death of #MahsaAmini. You have once again proved to have the guts to stand against the wrong . Hoping for others in the film & tv industry to follow you.”

Priyanka posted a message for the Iranian protestors on Instagram, saying she is in awe of their courage as they fight for their rights. “I am in awe of your courage and your purpose. It is not easy to risk your life, literally, to challenge the patriarchal establishment and fight for your rights. But, you are courageous women doing this every day regardless of the cost to yourselves,” the 40-year-old actor wrote.

Mahsa Amini was detained in September by Iran’s morality police, who said she didn’t properly cover her hair with the mandatory Islamic headscarf hijab. She collapsed at a police station and died three days later.

Her death set off protests in dozens of cities across the country and the government has responded with a fierce crackdown.

Priyanka called upon others to hear the protestors’ call and join in “with our collective voices.”

“We must also get everyone who can influence others to join as well. Numbers matter. Add your voice to this critical movement. Stay informed and be vocal, so these voices can no longer be forced to stay silent. I stand with you. Jin, jiyan, azaadi… Women, life, freedom,” she said.

On the work front, Priyanka will next be seen in the Russo Brothers’ ‘Citadel’. She is also expected to make her return to Bollywood in the upcoming Zoya Akhtar directorial that will see her share the screen with Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt.
