Princess Diana’s Iconic Sheep Sweater Is Going Up for Auction
Previously, the sweater was in the hands of Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, the founders of Warm & Wonderful. A few weeks after Diana’s polo outing, they received a letter from Buckingham Palace on behalf of the princess. It explained that the sweater had been damaged and asked if Muir or Osborne could repair it. After taking a look at the garment, the two knitted the Princess an entirely new one and stored the original in their attic; for decades, it lay there forgotten.
Until this past spring: “[In] March, as we were rummaging through the attic searching for an old pattern, we spotted a small box,” the founders said in a statement. “Inside, tucked away beside a cotton bedspread was Diana’s original red sheep sweater from 1981. Now, almost four decades later, this one-of-a-kind sheep sweater is ready to make its way into the hands of a fortunate collector.”
Recently, Princess Diana’s fashion and accessories have been selling for eye-watering sums at auction: in January, an aubergine Victor Edelstein dress sold for an astounding $604,800 after a bidding war broke out between four potential buyers. Meanwhile, that same month, Kim Kardashian bought Princess Diana’s Attallah Cross at Sotheby’s for over $197,000.
