Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s kids are now Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – Times of India
Apart from King Charles III, his wife Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince William, Kate Middleton and their three children, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and their daughter Lilibet “Lili” Mountbatten-Windsor, are now technically a prince and a princess respectively.
Following the death of the Queen and with her grandfather ascending the throne, the two Sussex children are entitled to the HRH title.
According to the protocols set by King George V in 1917, the children and grandchildren of a sovereign by default have the right to the title HRH and prince or princess. Since Archie and Lilibet were the great-grandchildren of the Queen, they were not entitled to their rights when she was alive. However, with the change in circumstances and now that their grandfather is the new Sovereign, they are automatically qualified as prince and princess.
In order to prevent Archie and Lilibet from becoming the prince and the princess, the King would have to issue a Letters Patent revising Archie’s right to be a prince and Lili’s right to be a princess.
During the bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle had claimed that her son was not given the ‘Prince’ title due to his mixed race.
On being asked if she would like him to have the title, she had said, “If it meant he was going to be safe, then of course.”
