Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Share Never-Before-Seen Photos of Their Early Romance
In interviews before the premiere of Harry & Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s new Netflix docuseries that debuted on December 8, Meghan Markle was clear that it would be about their love story. “I think that’s what people around the world connected to, especially with our wedding. People love love. I’m not excluded in that sentiment,” she told Variety. Indeed, during the first three episodes of the show, the couple opened up about the beginning stages of their relationship—both the good and the bad.
The first surprise? Their relationship actually began over Instagram. Prince Harry, scrolling through his feed, found a goofy video of Meghan posted by a friend. “Who is that?” he recalls asking himself. After inquiring further, the friend connected him with Meghan. She, in turn, asked to see his Instagram feed: “It was just beautiful photographs and all these environmental shots,” she remembers. From there, Harry says, “they were constantly in touch.”
They eventually met in person on July 2016 when she was in town for Wimbledon. Their first date was at Soho House on Dean Street—and Harry was 30 minutes late. Despite the delay, they instantly hit it off. “We were like childlike together,” Meghan says. Their date lasted an hour, and that very evening, Meghan called and asked to see him again the next night for dinner. A few weeks later, they decided to take a leap of faith and go to Botswana together. (“What am I doing? What if we don’t like each other,” Meghan remembers thinking.)
For the next few months, their relationship was long-distance. Meghan often flew to the United Kingdom for only a few days at a time between Suits filming. “It was just relaxed and easy,” Meghan says.
