President accepts Maharashtra Governor Koshyari’s resignation; Ramesh Bais to replace him

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has accepted the resignations of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Ladakh Lt. Governor Radha Krishnan Mathur.

“The President of India has accepted the resignations of Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari as Governor of Maharashtra and Shri Radha Krishnan Mathur as Lt. Governor of Ladakh,” a statement from the President’s Office said.

Koshyari’s resignation comes on the back of long-simmering discontentment with his position, with the Maharashtra Governor talking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year, in January, asking to step down from the position.

Jharkhand’s current Governor Ramesh Bais has been appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra, while Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra (Retd.), Governor of Arunachal Pradesh has been appointed as Lt. Governor of Ladakh.

President Murmu also announced a slew of appointment alongside these, naming Governors for Sikkim, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh among others. Four BJP leaders and former Supreme Court judge S Adbul Nazeer, who was part of the Constitution bench that upheld the archaeological report on Ayodhya, are among the six new faces.

  • Anusuiya Uikye, Governor of Chhattisgarh has been appointed as the Governor of Manipur
  • La. Ganesan, Governor of Manipur moves to Nagaland
  • Phagu Chauhan, Governor of Bihar, has been appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya
  • Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Himachal Pradesh will take over the responsibility in Bihar

“Appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices,” said the announcement from the President.
