Prem Sagar is the son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar who immortalised Ramayan for every Indian. Traffic would stop on the road when the show would be aired. Till date, the actors who played the role of Ram, Sitaand Laxman are revered. In a recent interview, the veteran pointed out that makers of Adipurush shouldn’t have attempted to make Ramayan into a film as filmmaking is a commercial art and makers create content keeping people’s requirement of it being paisa vasool.Commercial cinema often leads to makers compromising the sanctity of the subject.
He also doesn’t blame the writer Manoj Muntashir completely. He believes that Manoj is a very knowledgeable person and understands his roots but there would have been many commercial requirements on him as well to deliver.
Prem Sagar also recalls the time when he decided to make Ramayana into a TV show. Back then he was a movie mogul and people called him crazy to make a TV show. He also remembers that his father got into a fight with Doordarshan and Government of India as they wanted the episodes to be only 22 minutes while he wanted to have one hour long episodes, and that is how it became one of the biggest and most popular series in India.
