Power minister assesses progress and safety of Subansiri Lower hydro project

New Delhi: Power minister R. K. Singh held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the status of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, a 2000 Mega Watts undertaking spanning across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, being managed by NHPC Ltd.

Singh scrutinized the construction progress and safety measures of the project during this briefing, paying keen attention to the readiness for the impending monsoon season. The project leader provided an update on the various work packages’ status, emphasizing a strict adherence to safety protocols considering the approaching rainy season.

Key accomplishments have been noted in dam concreting, with 14 out of 16 blocks reaching the top elevation of 210 meters. The remaining blocks are set for completion by June 2023. An impressive achievement has been the pouring of over 250,000 cubic meters of concrete in the previous six months, allowing the dam’s height to be raised by 37 meters.

Additionally, the project has seen significant developments such as the river-facing wall of the power house reaching a safe elevation of 116 meters, and the completion of the tail race channel for all units. The water conductor system, too, is close to completion.

Post-review, Singh conveyed satisfaction with the project’s progress and advised NHPC to maintain all necessary safety precautions. The chairman and managing director of NHPC confirmed the company’s commitment to commission the first 250 MW unit by December 2023 or January 2024.

Other attendees included the secretary of power from the Ministry of Power, along with high-ranking officials from the ministry, Central Electricity Authority, and NHPC.
